March 2022 Tradewinds
Our March Madness edition of Tradewinds, a collection of our reading from the past month.
Sports:
As Mike Krzyzewski finishes his final season, Wright Thompson looks at the man who helped intensify the basketball flame on Tobacco Road.
Even the most diehard college hoops fans probably don’t know the name Bob Weltlich. I refereed some of his games when he coached at Florida International in the early 90s. Turns out he and Coach K share an unusual connection (soft paywall).
The 1996-97 Kansas team was perhaps the best college basketball team to not make the Final Four. Roy Williams described it as the most fun and easiest team to coach (soft paywall).
Investing:
We’ve written previously about Cathie Wood, founder and manager of ARK funds (no affiliation to Ark Royal Wealth Management!). The ARK funds enjoyed spectacular returns in 2017, but as is frequently the case, the performance seemed to be a function of luck rather than skill. Advisor Jeff Troutner explains investors would be wise to avoid ARK funds.
Human Interest:
A lot of Beatles fans know the band’s original drummer, Pete Best, was replaced by Ringo Starr. But once upon a time there was a 5th Beatle, and without him the Beatles might never have become the revolutionary band they did.
